Most people shopping for a lead auditor course online compare price and hours, then buy. That is how you end up with forty hours of slides, a multiple choice test you can sit with the book open, and no idea how to run an opening meeting when the plant manager is staring at you. Price and hours matter, but they are the last two things to check, not the first.
This guide gives you the checks I would run before paying for any ISO 22000 lead auditor course in 2026, and shows how our own ISO 22000:2018 Lead Auditor course answers each one. Use the checks on us and on everyone else.
What must an online ISO 22000 lead auditor course include in 2026?
Seven things. If a course misses two or more, keep looking.
- The current editions. ISO 19011 was republished in May 2026, ISO 22000 carries a 2024 amendment, and the PRP standards were rewritten in 2025. A course still built on ISO 19011:2018 and the old PRP technical specifications is teaching yesterday’s audit.
- Third-party certification rules. A lead auditor works inside ISO/IEC 17021-1 and, for food, ISO 22003-1. Without them you cannot plan Stage 1 and Stage 2, size an audit or grade a finding the way a certification body does.
- A complete practice audit. Not a role-play of one interview. The whole thing, from the application to the corrective action review.
- Graded findings. You should write findings and grade them major or minor, then have a person tell you where you were wrong.
- Proctored exams. If nobody checks who sat the exam, the certificate is worth less to the person reading your CV.
- Honest wording about certification. No course on its own makes you a certified lead auditor. Be wary of any that says it does.
- Enough hours to practise. FSSC 22000 version 7 asks that the lead auditor of a multi-site organisation’s internal audit team has completed a 40-hour FSMS, QMS or FSSC 22000 lead auditor course. Forty hours is a sensible floor for any serious course.
Which standard editions should the course teach?
Check the course outline for the year after every standard number. Here is what was current on 28 October 2026.
| Standard | Current edition | Why a lead auditor needs it |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 22000 | 2018, with Amendment 1:2024 (published 22 February 2024) | Your audit criteria. The amendment brings climate change into clauses 4.1 and 4.2, on context and interested parties. |
| ISO 19011 | 2026 (published 26 May 2026, replacing the 2018 edition) | Audit principles, the audit programme, how to conduct the audit and auditor competence. |
| ISO/IEC 17021-1 | 2015 | Requirements for certification bodies, including the definitions of major (3.12) and minor (3.13) nonconformity. |
| ISO 22003-1 | 2022 | What a body certifying food safety management systems must add, including categories and audit time. |
| ISO 22002-100 and ISO 22002-1 | 2025 (both published 28 July 2025) | The PRP requirements you audit on the floor. Part 100 covers the whole supply chain and Part 1 adds food manufacturing. |
FSSC 22000 version 7, published in May 2026, is built on ISO 22000:2018, the ISO 22002-x PRP series and the scheme’s own additional requirements. So a course on the current editions also prepares you for the standard underneath FSSC 22000, which is a GFSI benchmarked scheme.
Buy the course built on the 2026 editions
ISO 22000:2018 with Amd 1:2024, ISO 19011:2026, ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015, ISO 22003-1:2022 and the 2025 PRP standards, taught through an auditor’s eyes. About 44.5 hours, 12 months of access.
Does the course make you run an audit, or only read about one?
This is the check that separates courses. Reading about an opening meeting does not prepare you for an operations director who wants to cut the night shift out of your plan.
In our course you audit one company, Abita Dairy, in an online Audit Workbench. It is a training case built from real audit patterns, not a real business. You work through 13 steps, which take about 13 hours:
- application review, then Stage 1 and the readiness decision
- choosing the team and writing the Stage 2 plan with time allocated by process
- the opening meeting
- interviews and records against ISO 22000 clauses 4 to 10
- a site walk against ISO 22002-100:2025 and ISO 22002-1:2025, with a timed trace test
- writing and grading findings, then the closing meeting and your recommendation
- the audit report and the review of Abita’s corrective actions
A named examiner marks the whole audit out of 100. You need 70 to pass. Before that, each of Modules 2 to 8 ends with an integrated case study at a different international site, so by the time you reach Abita you have already judged evidence in several other factories. Every module also carries knowledge checks, an audit game and a compulsory activity.
How is the course assessed, and can you trust the result?
There are two exams. Exam A covers food safety management systems. Exam B covers auditing and audit team leadership. Both are online and proctored by webcam, and you show photo identification before you start. You need at least 70 percent in every section, and you have three attempts.
The outcome is recorded per unit. Each unit you pass as Competent earns a Certificate of Achievement: one for food safety management systems, one for auditing management systems and one for leading audit teams. If you do not reach Competent, you receive a Certificate of Attendance, which records only that you took the course.
That split matters to an employer. A Certificate of Achievement means you were tested, under supervision, on each skill.
How do you compare lead auditor courses fairly?
Ask every provider the same questions and write the answers down. Here are ours.
| Ask the provider | The ASC answer |
|---|---|
| Which edition of ISO 19011 do you teach? | ISO 19011:2026 |
| Do you cover ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO 22003-1? | Yes, in Modules 5 to 8, from audit duration to the certification decision |
| Will I run a full audit? | Yes, 13 steps on Abita Dairy, about 13 hours, marked out of 100 |
| Who marks my practical work? | A named examiner |
| Are the exams proctored? | Yes, by webcam, with photo identification |
| Do I have to take time off work or travel? | No. Fully online, self-paced, no live sessions |
| How long can I go back to the material? | 12 months from enrolment |
| Does the course make me a certified lead auditor? | No. The certificate is evidence of training (see below) |
A typical five-day classroom course gives you a trainer in the room, which some people value. It also takes you off site for a working week, and when the week ends you cannot go back and replay the session on grading findings. Online works best for someone who needs to fit study around a QA job and wants to repeat the hard parts.
What does a lead auditor course certificate prove?
It proves you were trained and, if it is a Certificate of Achievement, that you were assessed. It does not register you as an auditor. Personnel certification bodies decide on their own criteria, which usually include training, logged audit experience and references. Certification bodies then evaluate you again before they let you audit for them. Some schemes set their own course rules for certification body auditors, so read the current scheme document for the work you are aiming at.
Our course says this plainly in its first lesson and shows you how to keep the audit log you will need later.
Who should buy this course, and who should start elsewhere?
Buy it if you already have a working knowledge of HACCP and ISO 22000 and now need to audit them: QA and food safety managers who lead internal or supplier audits, consultants, second-party auditors and certification body auditors moving into FSMS lead auditing. The entry check at the start helps you decide.
If ISO 22000 is still new to you, start with Implementation of ISO 22000:2018. If you know the standard but have never audited, start with Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices and come back. For a feel of the finding writing you will do, read our post on how to write a food safety audit finding that gets fixed.
One practical point. Standards are copyright works, so no honest course gives you copies. You buy your own from ISO or your national standards body, and you need a clean copy of ISO 22000 with Amd 1:2024 for the exams.

Frequently asked questions
What should an ISO 22000 lead auditor course include?
The current editions of ISO 22000, ISO 19011 and the ISO 22002 PRP standards, the certification rules in ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO 22003-1, a complete practice audit, findings that you write and grade, and proctored exams. It should also tell you honestly that the course certificate is evidence of training, not personnel certification.
Is an online ISO 22000 lead auditor course as good as a classroom course?
It can be better for practice, if it makes you run a full audit and marks it. The ASC course has a 13-step virtual audit marked by a named examiner and webcam proctored exams. A classroom course gives you a trainer in the room but takes you off site and cannot be replayed.
How long does the ASC ISO 22000 lead auditor course take?
About 44.5 hours, of which the virtual audit of Abita Dairy is about 13 hours. It is self-paced with no live sessions, and you have 12 months of access from enrolment.
How much does the course cost?
USD 999. The store charges R16 595 in South African rand, and international Visa and Mastercard are accepted, with your card issuer doing the conversion. You buy your own copies of the standards separately.
Which version of ISO 19011 does the course use?
ISO 19011:2026, published in May 2026, which replaced the 2018 edition. The course also uses ISO 22000:2018 with Amd 1:2024, ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015, ISO 22003-1:2022, ISO 22002-100:2025 and ISO 22002-1:2025.
Will the course make me a certified lead auditor?
No course can do that on its own. Each unit you pass earns a Certificate of Achievement, which is evidence of training. Personnel certification bodies decide on their own criteria, and certification bodies evaluate auditors again before they use them.
Is the course suitable for beginners?
No. It assumes a working knowledge of HACCP and ISO 22000, and the entry check helps you judge that. Beginners should start with Implementation of ISO 22000:2018 or Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices.
