Free: the site walk

What does ISO 14001:2026 look like on a real site?

On a working site, an environmental management system lives in places like these eight, where an aspect, a law, a clause and a control meet. Walk Mzansi Fresh Meals, the ready meals plant used in ASC’s courses, the way an auditor would. Tap a number.

  1. Stop 1 of 8: Life cycle

    Goods-in and packaging

    Aspect
Packaging choices, supplier transport and what happens to your packs after the consumer has eaten the meal.
    Impact
Waste to landfill downstream of you, and producer responsibility obligations that follow the pack you put on the market.
    The law
The Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations, 2020 (paper and packaging, lighting, and electrical and electronic equipment), and your customers' packaging specifications.
    ISO 14001
    4.3 e), 6.1.2 life cycle perspective, 8.1 a) to d)
    Control
Environmental requirements in the packaging specification and the purchase order, communicated to suppliers and contractors, and information on disposal on the pack.
  2. Stop 2 of 8: Emissions to air

    Boiler house and stack

    Aspect
Combustion gases and smoke from the diesel-fired steam boiler, worst on a cold start or when the burner is out of tune.
    Impact
Local air quality for the neighbours, and greenhouse gas emissions that put climate change into your context analysis.
    The law
National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 39 of 2004: an Atmospheric Emission Licence if the boiler is a listed activity, the national small boiler emission standards if it is 10 MW to under 50 MW (GN 831 of 2013), and otherwise the municipal air quality by-law. Greenhouse gas reporting and carbon tax where thresholds apply.
    ISO 14001
    4.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.3, 8.1, 9.1.1
    Control
Burner service and combustion checks on a schedule, fuel use logged monthly, emission testing at the frequency your licence or by-law sets.
  3. Stop 3 of 8: Emergency situation

    Ammonia refrigeration plant

    Aspect
A potential ammonia release from a valve, a seal or a pipe failure in the engine room.
    Impact
Harm to people on and off site, and fish kills if ammonia-laden water from the response reaches a drain or the stream.
    The law
NEMA section 30 (emergency incidents: respond, report, clean up). The Major Hazard Installation Regulations 2022 and the Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations 2021 under the OHS Act, depending on the installation. This is where ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 meet.
    ISO 14001
    6.1.2 c), 8.2
    Control
Leak detection, drain covers kept at the engine room, an emergency plan that names who closes which valve, tested by a drill, and reviewed after every test or incident.
  4. Stop 4 of 8: Releases to water

CIP return and wash bay drain

    Aspect
Spent caustic and acid from cleaning in place, product losses and fats going to the trade effluent sewer.
    Impact
pH swings and organic load that overload the municipal works, and permit exceedances with your name on the sample.
    The law
Your municipality's trade effluent by-law and the discharge permit it issued to the site. The National Water Act 36 of 1998, section 19, if anything reaches stormwater.
    ISO 14001
    6.1.2 a) abnormal conditions, 8.1, 9.1.2
    Control
Operating criteria for dumping spent CIP solution (neutralise first, never at shift change), a grease and solids trap emptied on a schedule, permit results tracked against limits.
  5. Stop 5 of 8: Planning of changes

    The planned spiral freezer

    Aspect
A new freezer line, its refrigerant, its energy demand and the contractors who will install it next quarter.
    Impact
Higher electricity use, a new refrigerant to manage, and construction waste and noise while it goes in.
    The law
Whatever the change touches: the trade effluent permit if wash water changes, the waste contractor's licence, and the refrigeration installation rules.
    ISO 14001
    6.3 planning of changes (new in 2026), 6.1.2 b), 8.1
    Control
A change record raised before the order is placed: aspects reviewed, compliance obligations checked, contractors briefed, and the aspects register updated before commissioning.
  6. Stop 6 of 8: Environmental conditions

    Stormwater outlet to the stream

    Aspect
Diesel or oil reaching the stormwater system from the delivery bay or a burst hydraulic line, and wash water from the yard.
    Impact
Pollution of a small stream with its own ecosystem, which the 2026 edition asks you to think about as an environmental condition, not only a drain.
    The law
National Water Act sections 19 and 20. NEMA section 28 (duty of care and remediation) and section 30.
    ISO 14001
    4.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.4, 8.2
    Control
Spill kits at the delivery bay, drain covers, an outlet you inspect after rain, and a spill drill that ends at this point rather than at the spill kit.
  7. Stop 7 of 8: Waste and by-products

    Waste yard

    Aspect
General waste, food waste, used oil, empty chemical containers, fluorescent tubes and packaging.
    Impact
Pollution and nuisance if stored badly, and a liability that follows the waste to wherever your contractor takes it.
    The law
National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008, the Waste Classification and Management Regulations (GN R.634 of 2013), the National Norms and Standards for the Storage of Waste (GN R.926 of 2013), and the Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations for packaging.
    ISO 14001
    6.1.3, 7.5, 8.1 externally provided services
    Control
Segregation that the floor actually follows, a licensed contractor, and a safe disposal certificate for every hazardous load, filed against the waste manifest.
  8. Stop 8 of 8: Releases to land

    Chemical store

    Aspect
Storage and decanting of cleaning chemicals, lubricants and refrigeration oils.
    Impact
Soil and groundwater contamination from a leaking drum, and a chemical reaction if incompatible products share a bund.
    The law
The Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations 2021 under the OHS Act for people. NEMA section 28 and the Waste Act for what escapes or is thrown away.
    ISO 14001
    8.1 hierarchy of controls, 8.2
    Control
Bunds sized for the largest container and kept dry, incompatible chemicals separated, decanting on a drip tray, and a spill kit that matches what is stored.

Mzansi Fresh Meals is a training scenario built from real audit patterns. Which law applies to a real boiler, plant or discharge depends on its size and its licences, so check your own permits and by-laws.

Why environment, when food safety is clean

A clean food safety audit and a letter from the municipality in the same month.

Your FSSC 22000 grades are good. Then the trade effluent results come back over the limit, a retailer’s supplier questionnaire asks about ISO 14001, and the export customer wants to know what drought means for your water supply. Your food safety system answers none of these. ISO 14001 covers all three.

ISO 14001 sits on top of the law. A working system shows that a site knows its environmental obligations, meets them and keeps checking, which the NEMA duty of care expects of you anyway.

The standard first. Every clause reference on this page and in the courses was checked against the published 2026 text.
No site needed. Every activity runs on a case site with the data supplied, or on your own site.
South African law in every lesson. NEMA, the Waste Act, the Air Quality Act, the National Water Act and your municipal by-laws, tied to the clause they affect.

Where does that drain go, and what is allowed down it?6.1.2, 8.1, 9.1.2The auditor: Aspects determined, operating criteria set, permit results evaluated.
What happened after the diesel spill in March?8.2, 10.2The municipality: An emergency response that was planned, used, reviewed and improved.
Do you hold ISO 14001, or do you have a plan to certify?Supplier questionnaireThe retailer: A system built clause by clause, ready for stage 1.
How will climate change, drought or load-shedding affect your ability to supply?4.1, 6.1.4The export customer: Environmental conditions in your context, with risks and actions.
Who approved the new freezer, and who checked the refrigerant?6.3, 8.1The auditor: A change record raised before the order was placed.

Two minute readiness check

How ready is your system for the 2026 edition?

Eight questions: one about your certificate and seven about clauses that changed. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere. Answer honestly and the check tells you where you stand and which course fits.

Is your site certified to ISO 14001:2015 today?

Does your context analysis consider environmental conditions such as climate change, water availability, biodiversity and pollution levels, with a reason why each is or is not relevant?

Does your aspects register cover normal, abnormal and emergency conditions, and planned changes?

Do you have risks and opportunities determined from your aspects, compliance obligations and context, with actions planned?

Is there a record that changes such as new equipment, new contractors or a new law were planned before they were made?

Have you defined which externally provided processes, products and services you control and which you only influence?

Does every internal audit have written objectives, criteria and scope, and is the audit programme documented?

Has your compliance obligations register been checked in the last twelve months against NEMA, the Waste Act, the Air Quality Act, the National Water Act and your municipal by-laws?

Your result

Answer the questions to see your result.

Start with the first question: it decides whether you are moving a certificate or building a system.

What changed in ISO 14001:2026

The main changes from 2015, sorted by the work they take.

The fourth edition asks new questions about environmental conditions, risks and opportunities, and planned change. ISO lists two kinds of change in the foreword: alignment with the latest structure for management system standards, and clarification of requirements on key topics. On a typical certified site that becomes about seven things to build, a set of things to confirm and wording changes that need no action. The Transition course sorts all 27 changes for your own site.

4.1Build

Environmental conditions in your context

The issues you determine must now include environmental conditions that you affect or that affect you, with pollution levels, natural resources, climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem health named as examples. This replaces the 2024 climate change sentence.

6.1.4Build

Risks and opportunities get their own sub-clause

Determined after aspects and compliance obligations, considering context, interested parties and scope, including the risk of external environmental conditions affecting you. Planning action moves to 6.1.5.

6.3Build

Planning of changes

A new clause. Changes that affect or can affect the system are carried out in a planned and managed way so the intended outcomes are still achieved. Annex A.6.3 lists the sources of change.

6.1.2Build

Aspects under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions

Normal conditions are now explicit, planned change is linked to 6.3, and determining potential emergency situations moves here from 6.1.1, with a note that explains the life cycle stages.

8.1Build

Externally provided processes, products and services

Outsourced processes are gone. Anything externally provided that is relevant to the intended outcomes is controlled or influenced, with the type and extent defined in the system.

9.2.2Build

Audit objectives and a documented audit programme

Each audit now needs defined objectives as well as criteria and scope, and the audit programme itself has to be available as documented information.

4.2Build

Which needs you address through the system

4.2 c) now asks which requirements become compliance obligations and will be addressed through the system, and the note widens to environmental conditions.

4.3 e)Confirm

Life cycle control and influence in the scope

The scope considers your authority and ability to exercise control and influence over the life cycle. Annex A.4.3 says scoping should not be used to exclude significant aspects or to evade compliance obligations.

5.2Confirm

Policy commitments

The note now adds preservation or conservation of natural resources to the examples of specific commitments, beside climate change mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity.

9.3Confirm

Management review inputs and results

Split into 9.3.1, 9.3.2 inputs and 9.3.3 results. Outputs are now called results. The content is largely the same, so check your agenda and minutes template.

3Confirm

Terms

Policy is a new term. Risk and outsource are deleted. Process, indicator, risks and opportunities and audit are redefined, and stakeholder is admitted as another word for interested party.

10.1Confirm

Continual improvement

Clause 10 now has two sub-clauses. The old 10.3 merges into 10.1. Update your cross references.

7.5 and othersNo action

Available as documented information

Maintain and retain are replaced by available as documented information and available as evidence of. Annex A.3 says the intent has not changed. Rename nothing.

7.4, 8.2, 9.1.2, 10.2No action

Communication, emergencies, compliance evaluation, corrective action

Wording changes only. Your existing processes stand, as long as they work.

What did not change: there is no stand-alone climate clause, no requirement for a full life cycle assessment and no carbon footprint calculation, and the three intended outcomes are the same: enhanced environmental performance, meeting compliance obligations and achieving environmental objectives.

Compliance obligations

Which South African laws does an ISO 14001 system have to cover?

Clause 6.1.3 asks you to determine your compliance obligations, have access to them and know how they apply. Clause 9.1.2 asks you to evaluate whether you are meeting them. On most South African sites the register starts with these.

LawWhat it means on a siteWhere it lands in ISO 14001:2026
National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998The duty of care to prevent and remediate pollution (section 28), and what to do and whom to tell after an emergency incident (section 30).6.1.3, 8.2, 9.1.2
National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008Classification, storage, transport and disposal of waste, licensed contractors, safe disposal records, and extended producer responsibility for packaging.6.1.2, 6.1.3, 8.1
National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 39 of 2004Atmospheric Emission Licences for listed activities, national emission standards for small boilers of 10 MW to under 50 MW, and municipal by-laws for smaller boilers and generators.6.1.3, 8.1, 9.1.1
National Water Act 36 of 1998Water use authorisations, preventing pollution of water resources (section 19) and emergency incidents involving water (section 20).4.1, 6.1.3, 8.2
Climate Change Act 22 of 2024, Carbon Tax Act 15 of 2019 and the National Greenhouse Gas Emission Reporting RegulationsClimate response obligations, greenhouse gas reporting by those who meet the reporting thresholds, and carbon tax above the tax thresholds.4.1, 4.2, 6.1.4
Municipal by-lawsTrade effluent discharge permits and limits, air quality, noise and waste by-laws. For many food plants this is where the first letter from a regulator comes from.6.1.3, 9.1.2

One structure, several standards

Already running ISO 9001, ISO 45001 or FSSC 22000?

ISO 14001:2026 uses the same harmonised structure as the other ISO management system standards, so context, leadership, risks and opportunities, planning of changes, documented information, internal audit and management review can be run once for all of them. Emergency preparedness is where environment and safety overlap most, with ammonia plants and chemical stores as the classic case.

Questions people ask

Before you enrol.

Still unsure which course fits? A person answers WhatsApp during office hours.

Ask on WhatsApp
When was ISO 14001:2026 published, and what does it replace?

ISO 14001:2026, the fourth edition of the environmental management system standard, was published by ISO in April 2026. It cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 and its climate change amendment, ISO 14001:2015/Amd 1:2024. ISO describes the changes as alignment with the latest requirements for management system standards and clarification of requirements on key topics.

How long are ISO 14001:2015 certificates valid?

The standard itself sets no dates. Certification bodies and published guidance expect a three year IAF transition from publication, ending about 30 April 2029, with initial certification to the 2015 edition stopping earlier. Each certification body sets its own cut-offs inside that window, so confirm the dates that apply to your site with your certification body.

Can I do ISO 14001 training online?

Yes. All four ASC ISO 14001:2026 courses are online and self paced, on any phone, tablet or laptop, with the case site data supplied so you can do every practical task without a site of your own. Assessments are marked online, with a 70% pass mark and three attempts.

How much does ISO 14001 training cost in South Africa?

ASC prices its ISO 14001:2026 courses in rand with no VAT added: Introduction R1 495, Transition R1 950, Understanding and Implementation R4 800, and Internal Auditor R4 670, on special at R3 850 until 31 March 2027. Groups of five or more from one organisation can ask for a group arrangement.

How long does it take to implement ISO 14001?

Most sites that start from nothing need nine to twelve months from the gap assessment to the stage 2 certification audit, depending on size and on how much of the compliance work is already done. The Implementation course is built around a twelve month plan, and the Transition course around a shorter plan for certified sites.

Does ASC offer an ISO 14001 lead auditor course?

Not at present. The ISO 14001:2026 Internal Auditor course (FS59) trains you to audit your own system, your sites and your suppliers against clause 9.2 and ISO 19011:2026. Third party lead auditor courses run under separate auditor certification schemes.

What are the main changes in ISO 14001:2026?

Environmental conditions such as climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem health and natural resources in the context (4.1), a separate risks and opportunities sub-clause (6.1.4), a new planning of changes clause (6.3), aspects under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions (6.1.2), externally provided processes, products and services (8.1), audit objectives and a documented audit programme (9.2.2), and a restructured management review (9.3).

Is climate change now a requirement in ISO 14001:2026?

Climate change is named as an example of an environmental condition that your context issues must include, alongside pollution levels, natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem health. There is no stand-alone climate clause and no requirement to calculate a carbon footprint. You decide whether each condition is relevant to you and act on what is.

Is ISO 14001 a legal requirement in South Africa?

No. ISO 14001 is voluntary. The law is NEMA, the specific environmental management Acts, the National Water Act and your municipal by-laws. A working ISO 14001 system is how many sites show that they know their legal obligations, meet them and check that they still do, which is also what the NEMA duty of care expects.

We are already certified to ISO 14001:2015. Which course do we need?

Transition to ISO 14001:2026 (FS58, R1 950) for the person who owns the transition. Your internal auditors take the Internal Auditor course (FS59, R3 850 until 31 March 2027) if they have not been trained on the 2026 text, and everyone else who will be interviewed takes the Introduction (FS56, R1 495).

Do I have to do the Introduction before the Implementation course?

No. The Introduction is standalone and is not a prerequisite. If your job is to build or run the system, go straight to ISO 14001:2026 Understanding and Implementation (FS57, R4 800).

Do I need a site of my own to do the practical work?

No. Every practical task runs on a case site with the data supplied and a model answer: a ready meals plant, a citrus packhouse and a restaurant group. If you have your own site and permission to use its information, you may use it instead.

Does this apply outside food?

Yes. ISO 14001 applies to any organisation of any size in any sector. ASC's case sites come from food and agriculture because that is where ASC works, but the clauses, the South African law and the auditor's questions apply to any site.

When can I enrol, and can we train a team?

Enrolment is open now on all four courses. For five or more people from one organisation, ASC quotes a group arrangement and sends an invoice within one working day.

What does early access mean?

All four courses open in stages. Module 1 of each course is available from the day you enrol. The remaining modules, the knowledge checks, the final assessment and the certificate are released as each one is completed and reviewed, and they are included in the price you pay today.

What certificate do I get?

An ASC Food Safety Training certificate of completion that names the course, the course code and the date, with a verification code an employer can check. ISO does not certify people through these courses, and the courses are not approved or endorsed by ISO or by any certification body.
