What is different about Rustenburg
- The district issues the CoA. Municipal Health Services sits in Bojanala Platinum District Municipality’s Health department at Cnr Beyers Naude and Fatima Bhayat Drives, Rustenburg; the published switchboard is 014 590 4500 and there is no direct Municipal Health line (Govchain Bojanala lookup; Local Government Handbook 2025). Rustenburg Local Municipality publishes its own spaza shop registration notice for the business licence side (Rustenburg Local Municipality notices).
- Walk-in process, no published fee. The published route is to ask the district office for the CoA application form, submit it with a certified ID copy of the person in charge and a simple layout plan, and wait for an Environmental Health Practitioner to inspect; a shortfall means a list to fix and a re-visit. The fee is not published and neither is a turnaround, so ask when you call (Govchain Bojanala lookup).
- A district by-law backs the inspector. The Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Public Health By-law came into effect on 20 September 2022. It requires all facilities used for handling, preparing, storing and serving foodstuffs to comply with the regulations under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, and requires accommodation establishments to hold a district permit (FEDHASA summary of the by-law).
- Five local municipalities, 1.6 million people. Bojanala covers Rustenburg, Madibeng (Brits and Hartbeespoort), Moses Kotane (Mogwase and Sun City), Moretele and Kgetlengrivier (Koster and Swartruggens), with a population of 1 624 144 (Local Government Handbook 2025). The same district EHP service covers Sun City, which sits in Moses Kotane and borders the Pilanesberg National Park (Wikipedia, Sun City).
- Platinum belt realities. Rustenburg had a 2022 census population of 562 031 and mining makes up about 50 percent of the local economy across 41 platinum mines (Wikipedia, Rustenburg). Sibanye-Stillwater’s Rustenburg operation, north-east of the town around Kroondal, employed 21 959 people including contractors at 31 December 2025 (Sibanye-Stillwater).
