In what order should food safety consultants take these courses, and why?
Most South African clients start with a Certificate of Acceptability, so Persons in Charge comes first. GMP and HACCP for Supervisors come before Advanced HACCP, because you can only implement what you understand. Then take the implementation course for the scheme your clients use most: FSSC 22000, BRCGS or ISO 22000. Internal and Supplier Auditing, root cause analysis and the culture course cover what clients pay a consultant to fix after an audit.
How long does the food safety consultant path take, and what does it cost?
The 8 core courses take about 136 hours of self-paced study and cost R21 924 bought one by one. At 5 hours a week that is about 28 weeks, on a phone or a laptop.
That is about R2 741 a course. Set it against what it protects: a failed audit or a lost certification costs a business far more than any course on this page.
Hours and prices are read from each course page. Last checked 12 October 2026.

Questions food safety consultants ask before they enrol
What is the path for BRCGS Food?
For BRCGS Food clients, take Persons in Charge, Implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP for Supervisors and HACCP Teams, Advanced HACCP System Implementation, Implementation of BRCGS Issue 9 for Food Manufacturing, Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices based on FSMS, Root Cause Analysis One-Day and Food Safety and Quality Culture for Management and Supervisors. 8 courses, 138 hours. R21 924 bought one by one.
What is the path for ISO 22000?
For ISO 22000 clients, take Persons in Charge, Implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP for Supervisors and HACCP Teams, Advanced HACCP System Implementation, Implementation of ISO 22000:2018, Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices based on FSMS, Root Cause Analysis One-Day and Food Safety and Quality Culture for Management and Supervisors. 8 courses, 131 hours in total, R20 274 bought one by one.
Can I skip Persons in Charge if I already hold HACCP?
You can, but a Certificate of Acceptability is where most South African clients begin, and Food Safety Practices for Persons in Charge of Food Premises is the R638 Regulation 10(1)(a) training the municipality looks for before issuing one. At 16 hours and R1 699 it is one of the shorter courses in the path and the one clients ask about first. A consultant who has done it can tell a client exactly what the inspector will ask for.
Can I go straight to Advanced HACCP if I already hold a HACCP certificate?
You can enrol, but the path says no. Advanced HACCP System Implementation, 24 hours, assumes you know the seven principles, the HACCP plan and its records, which HACCP for Supervisors and HACCP Teams covers in 16 hours. Implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices comes before both, because a HACCP plan rests on working prerequisite programmes. You can only implement for a client what you understand yourself, so take the three in order.
Which scheme implementation course should a food safety consultant take first?
Take the course for the scheme your clients use most. Implementation of FSSC 22000 Version 7 for Food Manufacturing is 22 hours, R5 500. Implementation of BRCGS Issue 9 for Food Manufacturing is 24 hours, R5 500. Implementation of ISO 22000:2018 is 17 hours, R3 850. FSSC 22000 is built on ISO 22000:2018, so the ISO course is a sound base if your clients are split, and you can add a second scheme course later.
