Why Online R638 Training Works for Every SA City
The biggest myth in SA food safety compliance is that R638 training “must” be done in person at a classroom. That hasn’t been true since SAATCA accredited online providers from 2019. The current legal position:
- R638 Section 10(1)(a) requires the Person in Charge to be “suitably qualified or otherwise adequately trained in food safety and hygiene.” It does not mandate face-to-face delivery.
- The training must be from a provider accredited by SAATCA or HPCSA. ASC holds both.
- The certificate must be verifiable by the Environmental Health Practitioner at inspection. ASC’s certificates are QR-coded — instantly authenticatable.
- The Person in Charge must be able to demonstrate competence. ASC verifies this via live Zoom assessment with a SAATCA-credentialed assessor — the same assessor who would conduct a face-to-face viva.
This means a restaurant manager in Polokwane, a spaza shop owner in Khayelitsha, a hotel kitchen lead in Skukuza and a corporate caterer in Sandton can all complete the same training, sit the same live assessment, and receive the same QR-coded HPCSA-accredited certificate — without travelling to a classroom.
ASC’s online R638 PIC course was designed by a SAATCA Registered R638:2018 Lead Implementer (one of three in SA), is HPCSA-accredited, includes 17 hours of self-paced video-rich learning, the official Government Gazette R638 PDF, a comprehensive Learner Manual, a 60-point self-inspection checklist, WhatsApp learner support, and a final live Zoom video-call assessment.
