The virtual audit at ASC Beverages

ASC Beverages is a training case built from real audit patterns, a juice and soft drink bottler at Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal, with a distribution centre in Hammarsdale. It has applied for initial certification to ISO 14001:2026. It discharges effluent to the municipal sewer under a trade effluent permit, fires a 12 MW coal-fired boiler that is a controlled emitter under the small boiler standards, runs an ammonia refrigeration plant, sends hazardous waste off site and carries extended producer responsibility for its PET and glass bottles. You review its application and work out the audit time and EMS complexity, decide at Stage 1 whether it is ready, pick the team and plan Stage 2, interview its people from the managing director to the night shift effluent plant operator, test its records, walk the plant and the distribution centre, watch the boiler start-up at 05:30, run a waste trail against the clock, write and grade the findings, hold the closing meeting under pressure, write the report and judge its corrective action plans. That is 13 steps, about 13 hours on the step pages and about 3 more on the 11 timed stage quizzes that close steps 1 to 11.

Built on the current editions

  • ISO 14001:2026, the fourth edition published on 15 April 2026, audited clause by clause, with every change from the 2015 edition and its 2024 climate change amendment and the evidence an auditor should expect for each, from the environmental conditions in 4.1 to the new planning of changes in 6.3 and the restructured clause 10.
  • ISO 19011:2026, the fourth edition, for audit principles, audit programmes, the conduct of the audit and auditor competence, including its expanded guidance on remote auditing.
  • ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 for third-party certification and for grading nonconformities major or minor, and ISO/IEC 17021-2:2016 for the competence of EMS auditors, aspect by aspect, from emissions to air to waste.
  • The Global ACI documents that took over from the IAF in 2026, for EMS audit time and complexity (Global ACI-TECH-3-004, formerly IAF MD 5), multi-site (TECH-3-001, formerly IAF MD 1), remote auditing (TECH-3-003, formerly IAF MD 4) and the transition to ISO 14001:2026 (Global ACI-TECH-3-TR). SANAS, South Africa’s accreditation body, holds certification bodies to these rules.
  • South African environmental law as an auditor meets it, from NEMA and the Air Quality Act to the Waste Act, extended producer responsibility, the National Water Act and municipal by-laws.

The audit skills you practise

  • Reviewing an application for scope, IAF code, EMS complexity, effective number of personnel, audit time and impartiality.
  • Testing the aspects and legal registers against the site, including start-ups and other abnormal conditions, and potential emergency situations.
  • Planning the audit around the boiler start-up, the night shift and the second site, and choosing a team by IAF code and the aspect-specific competence in ISO/IEC 17021-2.
  • Walking the routes pollution takes, through drains, bunds, chemical stores, stacks, skips and the stormwater pond, and checking the paper against what you see.
  • Running the opening and closing meetings, including the operations director who says “the DC is just a warehouse” and wants it left out of the audit and the managing director who says paying the penalty tariff settles the trade effluent matter.
  • Following a hazardous waste consignment to its final destination, and a regulator’s letter back to the compliance evaluation.
  • Writing findings that record a compliance failure without declaring the organisation legally compliant or non-compliant, and grading them major or minor. In this course a nonconformity is graded major when a compliance obligation is not met, not identified, or not evaluated so that the organisation does not know whether it is meeting it. It is also major when a significant aspect or a potential emergency situation is left without a working control, so that pollution or an uncontrolled release is a realistic outcome.
  • Judging corrective action plans, including those that need capital or the regulator, and knowing when a root cause of “operator error” is no root cause at all.

What you walk away with

  • One ASC Certificate of Achievement covering the three units, EM, AU and TL, when you have passed all three.
  • Your own audit workbook from the virtual audit, with your checklists, site walk notes, trails, findings, report and corrective action review, exported as an Excel file.
  • A model answer for every case pack in the course, to compare with your own work.
  • The list in Lesson 8.5 of the records to keep, including your audit log, before you apply to a personnel certification body.

How the course works

A short start-up module, eight modules with 52 lessons, and the virtual audit. Part A, Modules 1 to 4, takes ISO 14001:2026 through an auditor’s eyes. Part B, Modules 5 to 8, takes ISO 19011:2026 and third-party certification. Self-paced with no live sessions, and 12 months of access. Most lead auditor courses run as four or five fixed days in a classroom or on a live call. This one fits around your own audits and your job, and the fee covers the virtual audit and both proctored exams, with no travel and no week away from site. Set it against one weak audit. A major missed at Stage 2 can surface later in a regulator’s letter, and a major whose corrective action is not verified within six months of Stage 2 means Stage 2 is done again. At four hours a week, that is about eleven weeks.

Exams Exam A in two sections and Exam B in three, video proctored 3

Every module from 2 to 8 has a compulsory activity and a module case study. Four activities are set at ASC Beverages and three at other invented sites, a paint and coatings maker, a sugar mill and an automotive parts plater. The case studies take you to an open-pit copper mine in Zambia, a leather tannery in Ethiopia, a private hospital group in Kenya, a road freight and fuel depot group in Namibia, a cement and quarry operation in Vietnam, a pulp and paper mill in Chile and a municipal water and wastewater utility in Botswana. Every lesson has worked cases with model answers and questions to think through before you reveal the answer.

How you are assessed

  • Three units, EM (Environmental Management Systems), AU (Auditing Management Systems) and TL (Leading Management System Audit Teams). When you have passed all three, you receive one ASC Certificate of Achievement that covers them.
  • Exam A on environmental management systems, in two sections, assesses unit EM. Exam B on auditing and audit team leadership, in three sections, assesses units AU and TL. Its third section comes in two parts, on writing and grading findings and on judging corrective action responses. Both exams are online and video proctored, with photo identification. You may use your own clean copy of ISO 14001:2026, and nothing else.
  • The virtual audit’s 11 stage quizzes, each set on the evidence in its step, also count towards the units.
  • You need 70 percent in every section of every assessment. You have three attempts, and each attempt draws a different set of questions. The course opens in order, so each part unlocks when you finish or pass the one before it. If you use all three attempts without passing, an R250 reopening fee, paid from the assessment page, re-opens that assessment at once, with no need to contact us.
  • Everything is marked automatically the moment you submit, with feedback that names the lesson or step to go back to. Nobody waits for a marker.

A course certificate is evidence of training, not personnel certification as an auditor. Certification as an EMS auditor or lead auditor is a separate step with a personnel certification body, such as Exemplar Global or the CQI and IRCA, on its own published criteria, such as logged audit experience. Lesson 8.5 explains that route.

Who it is for

SHEQ and environmental managers who lead internal or supplier audits, consultants who prepare clients for certification, and certification body auditors moving into EMS lead auditing, in any sector. Certification bodies must train their auditors in the 2026 edition before they audit to it. You need a working knowledge of ISO 14001. Try this before you enrol. At a metal finishing plant a rinse tank overflows into the stormwater drain twice in one quarter, and each corrective action reads “operator retrained”. Which clauses of ISO 14001:2026 apply, what is the environmental aspect and what is the impact, and is “operator retrained” a root cause? If you can answer all three in a line each without looking anything up, you are ready. If you are new to the standard, start with ISO 14001:2026 Understanding and Implementation. If you are new to auditing, start with ISO 14001:2026 Internal Auditor.

Who wrote it

Written by Mthokozisi Nkosi, founder of ASC Food Safety Consultants and a registered lead auditor with Exemplar Global and IRCA, and reviewed by ASC’s publication panel before it went live. ISO 14001:2026 is published by ISO. This course is independent training and is not approved or endorsed by ISO or by any management system certification body.

What you need

Your own copies of ISO 14001:2026, ISO 19011:2026, ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 and ISO/IEC 17021-2:2016. ISO 14004 and ISO/IEC TS 17012:2024 are useful but optional. Standards are copyright works, so they are not included. Buy them from ISO or your national standards body, such as the SABS. The Global ACI documents are free from global-aci.org. You also need a laptop or desktop with a webcam for the proctored exams.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ISO 14001 lead auditor course suitable for beginners?

No. It is an expert course for people who already know ISO 14001 and now need to lead audits. If you are new to the standard, start with ISO 14001:2026 Understanding and Implementation, or with Introduction to ISO 14001:2026 if environmental management is new to you. If you are new to auditing, start with ISO 14001:2026 Internal Auditor.

Should I take the internal auditor course or the lead auditor course?

Take ISO 14001:2026 Internal Auditor if you audit your own organisation’s EMS. Take this course if you lead, or will lead, audits of other organisations, such as supplier or certification audits. It adds third-party certification under ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO/IEC 17021-2, EMS audit time and complexity, leading an audit team and a full certification audit in 13 steps.

Is the course written for ISO 14001:2026 or ISO 14001:2015?

ISO 14001:2026, published on 15 April 2026. Lesson 1.4 covers every change from the 2015 edition and its 2024 amendment, and Lesson 1.9 and Module 8 cover transition audits. If you already hold an ISO 14001:2015 lead auditor certificate and only need the changes, Transition to ISO 14001:2026 covers them. Under the Global ACI transition requirements, initial certifications are to the 2026 edition only from 31 October 2027, and accredited ISO 14001:2015 certificates are no longer valid after 30 April 2029.

How long does the course take, and how long do I have access?

About 44 hours in total, including about 16 hours on the virtual audit and about 3 hours of exams. It is self-paced, with no live sessions, and you have 12 months from enrolment. At four hours a week, that is about eleven weeks.

How am I assessed?

By two online exams, video proctored with photo identification, and by the 11 stage quizzes of the virtual audit. Exam A, in two sections, assesses unit EM. Exam B, in three sections, assesses units AU and TL. You need 70 percent in every section, and you have three attempts, each with a different draw of questions. If you use all three without passing, an R250 reopening fee, paid from the assessment page, re-opens it at once. Everything is marked automatically when you submit.

What is the virtual audit?

A complete initial certification audit of ASC Beverages, a fictional juice and soft drink bottler in Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal, with a distribution centre in Hammarsdale, built from real audit patterns. In 13 steps you review the application, assess Stage 1, plan Stage 2, run the opening meeting, interview, test records, walk the site by day and at night, run a timed waste trail, write and grade findings, hold the closing meeting, write the report and review the corrective action plans. Steps 1 to 11 each end in a timed stage quiz, marked automatically.

Will this course make me a certified ISO 14001 lead auditor?

No course can do that on its own. When you have passed all three units, you receive one ASC Certificate of Achievement covering them, which is evidence of training. Certification as an auditor is a separate step with a personnel certification body, which applies its own criteria, such as logged audit experience.

Is the course recognised by Exemplar Global?

Yes. ASC Food Safety is an Exemplar Global Recognised Training Provider, and ISO 14001:2026 Lead Auditor is one of its recognised courses, whether you take it online, in a live virtual class or in class. It is aligned with Exemplar Global units EM, AU and TL, which means it was written to cover what those units ask of an auditor. ASC issues your certificate, not Exemplar Global. You can verify ASC’s recognition on Credly and see all the recognised courses.

Is the course CQI and IRCA certified?

No. It is recognised by Exemplar Global under its Recognised Training Provider scheme. Exemplar Global and the CQI and IRCA each certify auditors on their own criteria, and Lesson 8.5 explains both routes. If an employer or a certification body has asked you for a CQI and IRCA certified course by name, check with them before you enrol.

Do I need to know South African environmental law?

No. Lesson 1.6 covers the South African obligations an EMS auditor meets most often. The audit method, testing how an organisation identifies, applies and evaluates its own obligations, works under any country’s law, and all seven module case studies are set outside South Africa.

Which standards do I need to buy?

ISO 14001:2026, ISO 19011:2026, ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 and ISO/IEC 17021-2:2016. ASC cannot supply standards because they are copyright works. The Global ACI documents are free from global-aci.org. You need your own clean copy of ISO 14001:2026 for the exams.

Will the course work in my sector?

Yes. ISO 14001 applies to every sector. The case studies and activities take you to a copper mine, a tannery, a hospital group, a fuel depot group, a cement and quarry operation, a pulp and paper mill, a water utility, a coatings maker, a sugar mill and a metal plater, and the lessons draw on chemicals, construction, logistics, agriculture, hospitality and municipalities as well. The virtual audit is set at a beverage bottler because one site raises most of the questions an EMS lead auditor meets, such as effluent under a municipal permit, a coal-fired boiler, an ammonia plant, hazardous waste, extended producer responsibility for packaging and a second site that someone wants left out of the scope.

How much does the course cost, and can I pay from outside South Africa?

USD 999. The store charges in South African rand, R16 595 at checkout, and accepts international Visa and Mastercard cards. Your bank converts the amount to your own currency. The fee includes 12 months of access, the virtual audit and the proctored exams. Standards are bought separately.

Can my company train a team?

Yes. We can enrol a group online with a manager dashboard, or run the course as a live virtual class or in class for your team, in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Gqeberha. WhatsApp us for a quote.

Course Content

Before you start
Module 0 sets you up before Module 1. It explains how the lessons, games, knowledge checks, activities, module case studies and the 13-step virtual audit of ASC Beverages fit together, how units EM, AU and TL are assessed and certificated, and why a course certificate is evidence of training and not personnel certification. The course is aligned with Exemplar Global units EM, AU and TL. The module lists the standards to buy and shows how to pace about 44 hours of study. It ends with a 20-question entry check on ISO 14001 and auditing basics that tells you whether you are ready to start.

  • Lesson 0.1: How this course works, how you are assessed, and the personnel certification route
  • Lesson 0.2: Your copy of the standards, how the quizzes work, and the entry check
  • Entry check: ISO 14001 and auditing basics

Module 1: ISO 14001:2026 through an auditor’s eyes
Module 1 reads ISO 14001:2026 the way an EMS lead auditor reads it. It covers what an environmental management system is for and what the lead auditor answers for, the ISO 14000 family and how the standard is built, and the words that decide whether a finding stands. It then works through every change from ISO 14001:2015 and Amendment 1:2024 with the evidence to expect and the finding to write, the environmental science an auditor needs under the ISO/IEC 17021-2 aspect headings, the South African compliance obligations auditors meet most, what an EMS auditor may and may not say about legal compliance, integrated and combined audits, and the transition to ISO 14001:2026 under Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30 (M).

Module 2: Auditing context, leadership and planning, clauses 4 to 6
Module 2 turns clauses 4 to 6 of ISO 14001:2026 into audit work. You learn to test context and the environmental conditions an organisation affects and that can affect it, the new 4.2 c) decision on which interested party requirements the EMS will address, a scope that must not hide a significant aspect, and control and influence over the life cycle. You run the top management interview against 5.1 a) to i), test the policy’s commitments and check who holds authority on the floor, at night as well as by day. You audit the aspects register for its method, conditions, change, significance and life cycle, the legal register condition by condition, the new 6.1.4 risks and opportunities, planning action, objectives and the new 6.3 planning of changes, with every 2026 change flagged and every failure sent to the clause where it happened. Activity A2 tests six rows of ASC Beverages’ aspects and legal registers against the site, and the case study takes you to an open-pit copper mine in Zambia.

Module 3: Auditing support and operation, clauses 7 and 8
Module 3 takes clauses 7 and 8 the way an EMS auditor works them, with the paper checked against the drain, the bund, the stack, the skip and the meter. You audit resources, competence and awareness from the significant aspects outwards, follow complaints, regulator letters and external claims to their records, and test documented information where the work is done. You test operating criteria for effluent, stormwater, emissions to air and waste, and then for energy, water, refrigerants, fuel and chemicals. You audit the new requirement for externally provided processes, products and services, contractors on site and the life cycle items. You audit emergency preparedness against the emergency situations determined in 6.1.2 and test it without creating a hazard, and you walk a site along the routes pollution takes. Activity A3 plans the test of the emergency arrangements for the ammonia plant at ASC Beverages, and the case study takes you to a leather tannery in Ethiopia.

Module 4: Auditing performance evaluation and improvement, clauses 9 and 10
Module 4 audits the part of the EMS that checks and corrects itself. You audit monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation under 9.1.1, including whether a result is valid enough to rely on, and test the organisation’s own evaluation of compliance under 9.1.2 without ever declaring it legally compliant. You audit an internal audit programme that must now be available as documented information, with objectives for each audit, test management review against its 2026 inputs and results, and audit corrective action and continual improvement under the restructured clause 10. The last lesson follows one waste consignment and one compliance obligation end to end. Activity A4 runs a waste trail on ASC Beverages’ PET reject bales and boiler ash against the clock, and the case study takes you to a private hospital group in Kenya.

Module 5: Audit principles, audit programmes and third-party certification
Part B starts here. Module 5 sets out what an audit is and the vocabulary that decides how you report, the seven principles of auditing in ISO 19011:2026 and what breaking each one costs on an environmental audit, and how accreditation and certification fit together under ISO/IEC 17021-1, ISO/IEC 17021-2 and Global ACI, including what an accredited ISO 14001 certificate does and does not mean. You place an applicant in its IAF codes and its EMS complexity category, calculate EMS audit time under Global ACI-TECH-3-004 (formerly IAF MD 5) with Table EMS 1 and Table EMS 2, apply the multi-site rules in Global ACI-TECH-3-001 (formerly IAF MD 1), test an application for impartiality, and build an audit programme under clause 5 of ISO 19011. Activity A5 has you review a paint and coatings maker’s application under commercial pressure, and the case study takes you to a road freight and fuel depot group in Namibia.

Module 6: Planning the audit
Module 6 takes one audit from the programme and turns it into a plan that works on the day, following ISO 19011:2026 clauses 6.1 to 6.3 and the Stage 1 rules of ISO/IEC 17021-1. You make first contact and decide feasibility, with the season and the processes that must be running in mind. You run Stage 1 through the aspects and legal registers and the site’s regulatory history, and make a readiness decision. You write a risk-based Stage 2 plan that catches the shifts, the start-ups, the batch dumps and the weather, choose a team by IAF code and the aspect-specific competence of ISO/IEC 17021-2, with technical experts where the team needs them, prepare checklists, turtle diagrams and audit trails, and decide what can be audited remotely under Global ACI-TECH-3-003 (formerly IAF MD 4) and what a camera cannot show. The lessons use an invented sugar mill in KwaZulu-Natal, the activity has you pick and brief its audit team, and the case study plans the audit of a cement and quarry operation in Vietnam.

Module 7: Conducting the audit and determining findings
Module 7 takes the audit plan onto the site. You run the opening meeting and control the audit, including the line on legal compliance and the team’s safety, collect and verify evidence by interview, observation, records and monitoring data, test laboratory results against permit limits, and sample with limits you can state. You follow aspect, obligation, waste and top management trails at sites from landfills and tank terminals to quarries and hotels, and handle obstacles, pressure, suspected deception and a live pollution event during the audit. You write findings in three parts that record a compliance failure without declaring the organisation legally compliant or non-compliant, and grade them major or minor under ISO/IEC 17021-1 and the course grading rule. Activity A7 follows the municipality’s trade effluent letter at ASC Beverages back to the compliance evaluation, and the case study runs day one at a pulp and paper mill in Chile.

Module 8: Concluding the audit, follow-up and auditor competence
Module 8 takes the audit from graded findings to the certificate and the audits that follow it. You lead the team review that agrees conclusions, chair a closing meeting that holds under pressure and never turns into a legal opinion, write a report and recommendation a decision maker can rely on, and judge the client’s corrections, root causes and corrective action plans, including those that need capital or the regulator, until they can be closed on evidence. You then follow the certificate after Stage 2, through the decision, surveillance, recertification, transition audits to ISO 14001:2026 under Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30 (M), suspension and withdrawal, and what a certification body does when a client’s pollution incident, prosecution or regulator’s directive becomes known. The module ends with auditor and team leader competence under ISO 19011:2026 clause 7 and ISO/IEC 17021-2, and the route to personnel certification aligned with Exemplar Global units EM, AU and TL. Activity A8 has you accept or reject six corrective action plans at an invented automotive parts plater, and the case study follows an invented water and wastewater utility in Botswana from the closing meeting to the certification decision and its first test.
