Which courses does a Legionella responsible person need?
A Legionella responsible person in South Africa needs 2 online courses, in this order: Legionella Awareness Training (Basic) and Legionella Responsible Person Training (Intermediate). It takes about 14 hours of self-paced study. ASC is SAATCA registered (TC 065) and FoodBev SETA accredited (587/00337/1900).
In what order should Legionella responsible persons take these courses, and why?
Basic comes before intermediate. Legionella Awareness gives the biology: where it grows and how people are exposed. Legionella Responsible Person training then covers the risk assessment, the water management plan, monitoring and what to do when a result comes back high. The Regulations for Hazardous Biological Agents, 2022 require training before exposure, and refresher training at the interval the employer's risk assessment sets. South African occupational health and safety law is optional, for the legal side of the appointment.
How long does the Legionella responsible person path take, and what does it cost?
The 2 core courses take about 14 hours of self-paced study and cost R3 749 bought one by one. At 5 hours a week that is about 3 weeks, on a phone or a laptop.
Set it against what it protects: an incident, a Department of Labour notice or a stopped shift costs a business far more than any course on this page.
Hours and prices are read from each course page. Last checked 11 October 2026.

Questions Legionella responsible persons ask before they enrol
Is Legionella training a legal requirement in South Africa?
Yes, for exposed workers. The Regulations for Hazardous Biological Agents, 2022, made under the OHS Act, require training before exposure, and refresher training at the interval the employer's risk assessment sets. SANS 893 is a voluntary standard, not law. Legionella Awareness Training (Basic), 4 hours, R799, covers the biology and exposure. Legionella Responsible Person Training (Intermediate), 10 hours, R2 950, covers the risk assessment and the water management plan the appointed person owns.
Can I skip the awareness course and go straight to responsible person training?
The path says no: basic comes before intermediate. Legionella Awareness Training (Basic) gives the biology, where Legionella grows and how people are exposed, in 4 hours. Legionella Responsible Person Training (Intermediate) assumes that and spends its 10 hours on the risk assessment, the water management plan, monitoring and high results. The two together are 14 hours and R3 749 bought one by one. Both are online and self-paced with lifetime access.
Who should be appointed as the Legionella responsible person?
The person the employer appoints in writing to manage Legionella risk in the building's water systems. That person has to run the risk assessment, keep the water management plan, monitor and act on a high result, which is what Legionella Responsible Person Training (Intermediate) covers in 10 hours. South African Occupational Health and Safety Law (7 hours, R1 495) is optional, for the legal side of the appointment. The appointment is the employer's, not ASC's.
