Which courses does a health and safety representative need?
An H&S rep in South Africa needs 3 online courses, in this order: Health and Safety Awareness, Health and Safety Representative and Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation. It takes about 13 hours of self-paced study. ASC is SAATCA registered (TC 065) and FoodBev SETA accredited (587/00337/1900).
In what order should H&S reps take these courses, and why?
Section 18 of the OHS Act gives a health and safety representative the training the role reasonably needs, as agreed with the employer; the Act does not prescribe a course. Health and Safety Awareness gives the basics. The Health and Safety Representative course covers the duties: inspections, incident investigation and reporting hazards. Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation turns that into a method. Committee members and the employer's nominees add South African occupational health and safety law.
How long does the H&S rep path take, and what does it cost?
The 3 core courses take about 13 hours of self-paced study and cost R2 885 bought one by one. At 5 hours a week that is about 3 weeks, on a phone or a laptop.
Set it against what it protects: an incident, a Department of Labour notice or a stopped shift costs a business far more than any course on this page.
Hours and prices are read from each course page. Last checked 12 October 2026.

Questions H&S reps ask before they enrol
Does the OHS Act require a specific health and safety representative course?
No. The OHS Act does not prescribe a course. A representative is designated in writing under section 17, and section 18 gives the representative the training the role reasonably needs, as agreed with the employer. ASC's Health and Safety Representative course (5 hours, R895) covers the duties the role carries: inspections, incident investigation and reporting hazards. The certificate carries a QR code so the employer or an inspector can verify it.
Can I skip Health and Safety Awareness if I am already the rep?
You can, but the path assumes you have the basics. Health and Safety Awareness is 3 hours and R495, and gives the vocabulary that Health and Safety Representative (5 hours, R895) and Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation (5 hours, R1 495) build on. Every ASC course is self-paced, so a representative who already knows the basics can move through it quickly. All three together are 13 hours.
Should a health and safety committee member take the OHS law course?
Yes, that is who it is for. South African Occupational Health and Safety Law (7 hours, R1 495) is optional in this path and is marked for committee members and the employer's nominees, because the committee deals with the law as well as the floor. A representative who only inspects, investigates and reports can stop after Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation. With the law course the path is 20 hours; without it, 13 hours.
