  1. South African Occupational Health and Safety Law 7 h Intermediate Starts with the law because a SHE officer answers to the Act before any standard: 7 hours on the OHS Act, its regulations and who is liable. R1 495
  2. Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation 5 h Intermediate You hold a real risk register after this: hazards identified, risk assessed and incidents investigated, the core of every safety system the ISO 45001 planning clauses rest on. R1 495
  3. Introduction to ISO 45001:2018 6 h Foundation Optional If you only need to understand the standard Optional, if you only need to understand the standard: 6 hours on the structure and intent of ISO 45001:2018 without the implementation detail. R1 195
  4. ISO 45001:2018 Understanding and Implementation 20 h Intermediate The occupational health and safety management system built clause by clause over 20 hours, so you can write, implement and maintain it for certification. R3 950

Which courses does a SHE officer need?

A SHE officer in South Africa needs 4 online courses, in this order: South African Occupational Health and Safety Law, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation, ISO 45001:2018 Understanding and Implementation and ISO 45001:2018 Internal Auditor. It takes about 46 hours of self-paced study. ASC is SAATCA registered (TC 065) and FoodBev SETA accredited (587/00337/1900).

In what order should SHE officers take these courses, and why?

A SHE officer has to know the law before the standard, so South African Occupational Health and Safety Law comes first, then hazard identification and risk assessment, the core of every safety system. ISO 45001:2018 Understanding and Implementation builds the management system; the introduction is optional if you only need to understand the standard. The internal auditor course closes the path, so the system audits itself before the certification body does.

How long does the SHE officer path take, and what does it cost?

The 4 core courses take about 46 hours of self-paced study and cost R10 790 bought one by one. At 5 hours a week that is about 10 weeks, on a phone or a laptop.

That is about R2 698 a course. Set it against what it protects: an incident, a Department of Labour notice or a stopped shift costs a business far more than any course on this page.

Hours and prices are read from each course page. Last checked 11 October 2026.

Questions SHE officers ask before they enrol

Is this SHE officer path the same as SACPCMP construction health and safety registration?

No. This path is for the SHE or safety officer who runs occupational health and safety for a site, usually to ISO 45001:2018. It is not the SACPCMP registered construction health and safety officer route, which has its own registration requirements. The courses here, from South African Occupational Health and Safety Law to ISO 45001:2018 Internal Auditor, are online and self-paced, with a QR coded certificate for each.

Do I need Introduction to ISO 45001 before Understanding and Implementation?

No. Introduction to ISO 45001:2018 (6 hours, R1 195) is optional and is for a person who only needs to understand the standard. ISO 45001:2018 Understanding and Implementation (20 hours, R3 950) builds the management system and stands on its own. If you will implement the system, go straight to it after Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation. If you only need to brief management, the introduction may be enough.

Can I do the ISO 45001 internal auditor course without the implementation course?

You can enrol, but the path puts ISO 45001:2018 Internal Auditor (14 hours, R3 850) last for a reason: an auditor has to know the system well enough to find what the certification body will find. ISO 45001:2018 Understanding and Implementation (20 hours, R3 950) gives that knowledge. Together the two are 34 hours, R7 800. Each ends with an assessment at a 70% pass mark with three attempts.
