Which courses do hotel, lodge and guesthouse staff need?
These courses are per job, not per person. Kitchen staff take Food Handlers under R638 10(1)(b), housekeeping takes Chemical Safety, front desk takes the POPIA course, maintenance takes Legionella Awareness, and everyone takes Guesthouse Support Staff Essentials and Fire Safety and Evacuation. A property enrols each person on their own course: 6 core courses and 25 hours across the team.
Who takes which course, and why?
Accommodation teams carry more than food safety. Guesthouse Support Staff Essentials covers the everyday work of the house. Kitchen and breakfast staff need Food Handlers under R638. Housekeeping handles chemicals daily, so chemical safety follows, then fire safety and evacuation for the night it matters. Legionella Awareness is for maintenance and housekeeping before they work on showers and geysers, with refresher training at the interval your risk assessment sets. Front desk staff take the POPIA course, and the owner or kitchen manager named on the Certificate of Acceptability adds Persons in Charge.
How long does the hotel and guesthouse staff path take, and what does it cost?
The 6 core courses take about 25 hours of self-paced study and cost R3 847 bought one by one. At 5 hours a week that is about 5 weeks, on a phone or a laptop.
That is about R641 a course. Set it against what it protects: a failed inspection or a closed premises costs a business far more than any course on this page.
Hours and prices are read from each course page. Last checked 12 October 2026.

Questions hotel, lodge and guesthouse staff ask before they enrol
Does every guesthouse employee need Basic Food Safety Practices for Food Handlers?
No. Only staff who handle food, in the kitchen and at breakfast, need Basic Food Safety Practices for Food Handlers under R638 regulation 10(1)(b), 6 hours and R899 each. Housekeeping takes Chemical Safety for Housekeeping and Laundry, front desk takes Guest Data Protection (POPIA) for Front Desk and Reservations, and the whole team takes Guesthouse Support Staff Essentials and Fire Safety and Evacuation for Accommodation.
Who needs Legionella Awareness and who needs Legionella Responsible Person training?
Maintenance and housekeeping staff take Legionella Awareness Training (Basic), 4 hours and R799, before they first work on showers and geysers. The general manager or chief engineer appointed as the responsible person for Legionella takes Legionella Responsible Person Training (Intermediate), 10 hours and R2 950. The basic course is in the core path; the responsible person course is optional.
Can hotel staff do these courses on a phone between shifts?
Yes. Every ASC course is online and self-paced with lifetime access, so a housekeeper can finish Chemical Safety for Housekeeping and Laundry, 3 hours, over a few quiet afternoons on a phone, and a receptionist can do the 3 hour POPIA course the same way.
