  1. Introduction to HACCP 8 h 76 enrolled · 4.5★ (14) Comes first because both schemes build on hazard analysis, so you can identify migration, foreign body, print and hygiene hazards in a packaging plant and control them. R1 195
  2. Introduction to BRCGS for Packaging Materials 13 h Intermediate 18 enrolled You can scope a first BRCGS Packaging Materials certification and brief the plant on what changes after this introduction to the standard and the way its audit works. R1 195
  3. Implementation of BRCGS for Packaging Materials 18 h Advanced The requirements of BRCGS Packaging Materials worked through for a converter or manufacturer, so you can build the system and take it through the audit. R5 380
  4. Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices based on FSMS 24 h 32 enrolled · 4.7★ (9) Follows the scheme course so you can audit your own plant and your raw material suppliers against the FSMS before the certification body does. R3 650
  5. Food Safety for Engineering and Maintenance Teams 5 h Foundation Optional Engineering lead and maintenance team Optional for the engineering lead and maintenance team, so they can work on food-contact lines without introducing lubricants, swarf or loose parts into the product. R1 399
  6. ISO 22002 Prerequisite Programme Requirements 8 h Intermediate Optional 12 enrolled Optional, covering the ISO 22002 prerequisite programme requirements for the food, feed and packaging supply chain, so you can map your PRPs to the standard. R1 500

Which courses does a QA at a packaging manufacturer need?

A site certified to BRCGS Packaging Materials needs 4 courses and 63 hours: Introduction to HACCP, Introduction to BRCGS for Packaging Materials, Implementation of BRCGS for Packaging Materials and Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices based on FSMS, in that order, R11 420 bought one by one. Food Safety for Engineering and Maintenance Teams and ISO 22002 Prerequisite Programme Requirements are optional additions.

In what order should packaging QAs take these courses, and why?

Packaging is a food-contact material, so the hazards are migration, foreign bodies, print errors and hygiene. Introduction to HACCP comes first, because both schemes build on hazard analysis. Then pick your scheme: BRCGS Packaging Materials, introduction and implementation, or FSSC 22000 for Food and Feed Packaging Manufacturing. Internal and Supplier Auditing follows. The engineering and maintenance course is optional for the engineering lead, and the ISO 22002 prerequisite programme course covers the packaging part of the PRP standard.

How long does the packaging QA path take, and what does it cost?

The 4 core courses take about 63 hours of self-paced study and cost R11 420 bought one by one. At 5 hours a week that is about 13 weeks, on a phone or a laptop.

That is about R2 855 a course. Set it against what it protects: a failed audit, a lost customer or a product recall costs a business far more than any course on this page.

Hours and prices are read from each course page. Last checked 11 October 2026.

Questions packaging QAs ask before they enrol

What is the path for FSSC 22000?

A packaging site certified to FSSC 22000 needs 3 courses and 42 hours: Introduction to HACCP, FSSC 22000 Version 7 for Food and Feed Packaging Manufacturing and Internal and Supplier Auditing Practices based on FSMS, in that order, R10 345 bought one by one. Food Safety for Engineering and Maintenance Teams and ISO 22002 Prerequisite Programme Requirements are optional.

Does a packaging manufacturer need HACCP for BRCGS Packaging Materials?

Yes. BRCGS Packaging Materials and FSSC 22000 both build on a hazard and risk analysis of the process, and for packaging the hazards are migration, foreign bodies, print errors and hygiene rather than cooking and cooling. Introduction to HACCP, 8 hours and R1 195, gives the method, which is why it comes first in both versions of this path. The scheme course then shows how that analysis fits the standard's clauses.

Do maintenance teams at a packaging plant need food safety training?

Both schemes expect everyone whose work can affect product safety to be trained, and engineers working on food-contact lines can affect it as much as operators. Food Safety for Engineering and Maintenance Teams, 5 hours and R1 399, is the optional course in this path for the engineering lead and the maintenance team. It is short enough to run across a team and gives the QA the training record an auditor asks for.

What is the ISO 22002 course for in a packaging path?

ISO 22002 Prerequisite Programme Requirements, 8 hours and R1 500, covers the prerequisite programme standard for the food, feed and packaging supply chain, including the packaging part. It is optional. An FSSC 22000 site needs it most, because FSSC 22000 is built on ISO 22000 plus a sector PRP standard, which for packaging is ISO/TS 22002-4, plus additional requirements. A BRCGS Packaging Materials site can use it to map its PRPs, but the BRCGS standard carries its own requirements.
