ISO 14001:2026 contains no transition deadline. The dates come from the International Accreditation Forum and your certification body. Certification bodies expect a transition of about three years from publication, ending about 30 April 2029, with new certificates to the 2015 edition stopping earlier. Treat every date as provisional and confirm it in writing with your own certification body.
A packhouse manager in the Sundays River Valley phoned me in May. His European buyer wanted to know when the certificate would say 2026. His recertification falls late in 2027 and his budget closes in February. He wanted one date. I gave him the questions that would get him the right one, and a plan that works whichever date his certification body confirms.
That plan is what Transition to ISO 14001:2026 builds with you: a delta check of your system, an evidence position on every change and a dated action plan that works back from your audit, plus a readiness score. About 8 hours on your phone, R1 950. See the course before your next budget meeting.
Does ISO 14001:2026 set a transition deadline?
No. The fourth edition has no transition period, cut-off or certification date in it. Its foreword only says it cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 and Amendment 1:2024.
ISO writes standards. It does not certify anyone and it does not run certification schemes. Accredited certification runs on rules from the International Accreditation Forum, applied by accreditation bodies and the certification bodies they accredit. That is where transition dates live.
So when someone quotes you a deadline, ask where it came from. A date in your certification body’s transition notice carries weight. A date in a consultant’s social media post does not, and that includes mine.
What dates are certification bodies working to?
Published guidance points to a three year transition ending about 30 April 2029, with initial certification to the 2015 edition stopping earlier. None of these dates is in the standard, so confirm each one with your certification body.
| Milestone | Expected date | How firm is it? |
|---|---|---|
| Publication of ISO 14001:2026 | 15 April 2026 | Fixed. It is printed on the standard. |
| Length of the transition | About three years from publication | Expected. Confirm with your certification body. |
| End of the transition | About 30 April 2029 | Expected. Confirm with your certification body. |
| Last new certificates to ISO 14001:2015 | Earlier than the end of transition. One published source gives 30 October 2027 | Uncertain. Ask your certification body. |
| ISO 14001:2015 certificates after the transition | Expected to lose validity | Expected. Confirm the exact rule. |
Two things differ between certification bodies more than people expect: how much audit time they add for the transition, and which audits they will use for it. Ask both in the same email as the dates.
Can a site still be certified to ISO 14001:2015?
Possibly, for a short while, but it makes little sense. New certificates to the 2015 edition are expected to stop well before the transition ends, so a site certifying for the first time should build to 2026.
I tell first time sites the same thing every time. Do not build a 2015 system in 2026. You would pay for a certificate that needs a transition within months. Build to the 2026 text from the start, following a step by step ISO 14001:2026 implementation plan. The ISO 14001:2026 Understanding and Implementation course (R4 800, about 24 hours) builds every register you need on your own site.
Should you transition at a surveillance audit or at recertification?
Use the audit that leaves you room to close findings before the expected end of the transition. Recertification is the natural choice if it comes early enough. If it falls close to the end, transition at a surveillance audit instead.
| Your next recertification | Sensible plan | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| During 2027 | Transition at recertification if you are ready, otherwise at the first surveillance after it | Starting the builds too late for the first audit |
| During 2028 | Transition at recertification, with a buffer to close findings | Builds that need months of records, such as a full audit cycle |
| Early 2029 | Do not wait. Transition at a 2027 or 2028 surveillance audit | No time left to close nonconformities before the expected end date |
Certification bodies normally require nonconformities raised at a transition audit to be dealt with before the 2026 certificate is issued. If your audit falls a few weeks before the end of the transition and you get a major finding on 6.1.4, you can run out of calendar. I watched sites run out of calendar in earlier ISO transitions, and the phone calls to customers afterwards were not pleasant.
Do not let the calendar decide for you. Enrol in Transition to ISO 14001:2026 and build a dated plan around your real audit date in about 8 hours of self paced lessons. R1 950, no VAT added.
What happens to a 2015 certificate after the transition ends?
Under the usual approach to transitions, a certificate to the 2015 edition is expected to stop being valid when the transition period ends. Confirm the exact rule with your certification body.
The cost is not only the certificate. Retail supplier listings, export buyer questionnaires and some tenders ask for a valid ISO 14001 certificate. If yours lapses, you may face a full initial certification audit instead of a transition audit, and you will have to explain the gap to every customer who checks.

How do you plan backwards from your audit date?
Start from the audit, not the standard. Each step below takes time, and the last three cannot be rushed because they depend on records the system has to produce.
- Email your certification body. Ask for the transition dates it applies, which audit it will use, how much extra audit time it adds and what it wants to see beforehand. Keep the reply.
- Put the agreed audit date into management review minutes and give it an owner and a budget.
- Buy ISO 14001:2026 and run a delta check, labelling every change no action, confirm or build. Use the gap analysis checklist.
- Date the builds: 4.1 to 4.3 first, then 6.1.2 and 6.1.4, then 6.3, 8.1 and 9.2.2.
- Update procedures, cross references and awareness material.
- Let the system run long enough to make records: a change planned under 6.3, an external provider reviewed under 8.1, an audit with defined objectives.
- Run an internal audit against the 2026 text and act on the findings.
- Hold a management review that covers every 9.3.2 input and records the 9.3.3 results.
- Build the evidence file, as set out in preparing for your transition audit.
Count the weeks between step 1 and your audit. In my experience a single site with a working 2015 system needs a few months for this, not a few weeks.
What should you tell customers until then?
Tell them the truth with a date: you hold a valid ISO 14001:2015 certificate, you have started the transition and your transition audit is planned for a named month.
A line like this works on a retailer questionnaire: Our ISO 14001:2015 certificate is valid. We have completed a gap analysis against ISO 14001:2026 and our transition audit is planned for [month and year]. Never claim certification to the 2026 edition before the certificate is issued. Buyers check, and a false claim costs more than an honest date.
Frequently asked questions
When is the ISO 14001:2026 transition deadline?
ISO 14001:2026 itself sets no deadline. Certification bodies expect a transition of about three years ending about 30 April 2029, so confirm the exact date with your own certification body.
Who sets the ISO 14001:2026 transition dates?
The International Accreditation Forum and accredited certification bodies set the transition rules, not ISO. The date in your certification body’s written transition notice is the one that applies to you.
Can I still get certified to ISO 14001:2015?
New certification to the 2015 edition is expected to stop before the transition ends, and one published source gives 30 October 2027. A site certifying for the first time should build its system to ISO 14001:2026.
Can the transition be done at a surveillance audit?
Certification bodies may allow the transition at a surveillance or a recertification audit, sometimes with extra audit time. Ask yours which audits it will use and how much time it adds.
What happens if my site misses the transition deadline?
A 2015 certificate is expected to lose validity when the transition ends, which can mean starting again with an initial certification audit. Confirm the exact rule with your certification body.
How long does it take to prepare for the ISO 14001:2026 transition?
It depends on your gaps, but builds such as the risks and opportunities register and a documented audit programme need time to produce records. Plan in months, working back from your audit date.
Which ASC course gets you ready before the deadline?
Transition to ISO 14001:2026 is for sites that already hold a 2015 certificate. It starts with the fourth edition and the transition dates, sorts every change into no action, confirm or build, and ends with your evidence file and a readiness score for the transition audit.
